Want to perform a simple Janmashtami puja at home but not sure where to begin? In this video, I guide you through a simple Krishna Janmashtami puja step by step, designed especially for beginners and families who want to celebrate at home without making the ritual unnecessarily complicated. You do not need to buy a Laddu Gopal, perform Panchamrita abhishekam, keep an elaborate jhula or know difficult Sanskrit mantras. Even a simple Krishna photo is enough for this puja. We begin with the morning setup and go through each step slowly — preparing the puja space, lighting the deepam, taking a simple sankalpam, offering gandha, flowers and Tulsi, chanting Krishna’s name, offering naivedyam and drinking water, performing aarti and finally completing the puja with namaskara. I also explain the meaning behind each important step, so you are not simply copying a ritual without understanding why it is being performed. For naivedyam, you do not need to prepare many dishes. Even one fruit or a homemade sweet is enough. You may also offer butter and mishri or avalakki — beaten rice — which has a beautiful association with Krishna through the story of Sudama. In the video, I also answer some of the most common Janmashtami questions: • Do I need Laddu Gopal for Janmashtami puja? • Is abhishekam compulsory? • What if I do not have Tulsi or flowers? • What can I offer as naivedyam? • How should I observe fasting? • What can children do during Janmashtami? • What should we do for Krishna Janma at midnight? • What should we do with the prasadam, flowers and Tulsi after the puja? • When should we clear the Janmashtami setup? If your family celebrates Krishna Janma at midnight, you can gather again for bhajans, nama japa and aarti. Midnight, during Nishita Kaal, is traditionally the central moment of the Janmashtami celebration. The following morning, you can thank Krishna and respectfully clear the temporary Janmashtami decorations. Most importantly, remember Krishna’s teaching: Patram Pushpam Phalam Toyam — a leaf, a flower, a fruit or even water offered with devotion is accepted by him. So do not worry if your puja is simple. Offer what you have, chant Krishna’s name and celebrate Janmashtami with devotion. Save this video so you can follow it during your puja, and please share it with someone who may be celebrating Janmashtami at home without anyone beside them to guide them.
