Here is the first movement of Jean Sibelius’ (zhahn (rhymes with “John”) seh-bel’-ee-iss) Fifth Symphony. Sibelius wrote seven symphonies, and his Fifth is by far the most popular and frequently performed as well as my second favorite of his seven. I think it’s so popular because it’s a big, romantic, and exciting masterpiece. It gradually builds momentum from the beginning to the end like a locomotive picking up speed. The coda, and especially the last thirty seconds, is some of the most exhilarating music I’ve heard. This conductor takes the ending so fast that it makes my hair stand up, and just listen to those trombones - holy mackerel! Right behind this, I will send you my absolute favorite Sibelius symphony to bring our survey of his music to a fitting conclusion. (Please start at the beginning and end at 13:05.)
