Romans 5 explains the results of trusting in Christ rather than in ourselves. In this chapter, Paul explains what changed the moment we believed. These things are a spiritual reality for every believer, and when we know and understand them, our lives and actions will be changed. Believers have access to God’s grace, we have a future hope, and we understand the purpose of suffering and how, through it, we can have joy. We are saved from the wrath of God, and we have God’s love. Paul then takes the second half of chapter 5 to compare and contrast Adam and Jesus. Adam is a picture and type of Christ, in that his life and actions are, in some ways, similar to Jesus. We see this in how, through one man, Adam’s disobedience brought sin and condemnation to all humanity, leading to death. However, through one man, Jesus’ obedience, righteousness, and justification come to all redeemed humanity, leading to life.
