THE ODYSSEY — SHOT ENTIRELY IN IMAX
IMAX film has existed since 1970, but until The Odyssey no one had ever shot a full narrative feature on it. The reason was sound. An IMAX frame is 15 perforations wide on 65mm film, running horizontally at roughly five and a half feet of film per second — and moving that much celluloid makes a noise cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema once compared to "an unhinged lawn mower." That ruled out usable dialogue, which is why every Nolan film from The Dark Knight through Oppenheimer paired IMAX spectacle with quieter cameras for intimate scenes.
THE IMAX KEIGHLEY CAMERA
After Oppenheimer, Nolan asked IMAX to remove the limiting factor. The groundwork was already there: in 2022, IMAX had begun building a new fleet of 65mm film cameras with Kodak, Panavision and FotoKem, with Nolan and Jordan Peele advising on specifications. The result is the Keighley — a ground-up rebuild with a multi-layer carbon fiber body, a brighter Panavision viewfinder, a five-inch color LCD and a 4K video tap. The film movement itself was deliberately left alone.
THE BLIMP AND THE MIRRORS
Quieter is not silent, so the production wrapped the camera in a purpose-built soundproof housing — the blimp — which took about two years to build and weighs roughly 300 pounds fully assembled. It let them record dialogue with the camera six inches from an actor's nose, but it also sat exactly where the other actor should be, destroying the eyeline. The fix was two small mirrors.
THREE MINUTES AT A TIME
An IMAX magazine holds 1,000 feet of film — about two and a half minutes at 24 frames a second. Across 91 days, six countries and seven IMAX cameras, the crew shot roughly two million feet of Kodak film, processed at FotoKem in Burbank, working in a way much closer to theater than modern digital production.
