Are you exhausted from holding everything together, giving to everyone else, and wondering why you no longer feel like yourself?
Midlife burnout can look like physical and emotional exhaustion, disconnection, self-doubt, overwhelm, irritability, loss of confidence and the feeling that you have nothing left to give. But as psychologist Shannon Swales explains in this FeelGood Conversation, burnout in midlife is rarely about simply needing to “cope better.”
In this episode of FeelGood Conversations, I speak with Shannon about the powerful intersection between burnout, perimenopause, identity, self-compassion, mental health and the pressures many women experience during midlife.
Shannon brings both professional expertise and lived experience to this conversation. After experiencing significant burnout herself at 41 and stepping away from clinical psychology for two years, she returned to her profession with a new focus: helping women understand and recover from burnout and develop a stronger relationship with themselves.
One of the most important themes we explore is empathy fatigue — the exhaustion that can develop after years of directing care, compassion and energy towards children, partners, family, colleagues and work while struggling to allow that same care to flow back towards ourselves.
And underneath the exhaustion, many women eventually arrive at a deeper question:
“Where did I go?”
Shannon shares that many of the women she works with aren't simply asking to feel less tired. They want to feel like themselves again. They want to understand who they are, what they need and what matters to them now.
In this conversation we explore:
why midlife women may be particularly vulnerable to burnout and empathy fatigue
why burnout isn't simply an individual failure or lack of resilience
how self-blame, perfectionism and the belief that we should be able to “cope” can make burnout worse
the relationship between perimenopause, chronic stress and the wider midlife transition
why reconnecting with yourself can become an important part of burnout recovery
why values can provide a compass for making more aligned choices
how self-compassion can help us respond differently when life remains difficult
why learning to receive care, rather than constantly giving it, matters
the difference between eliminating difficult feelings and learning how to hold them without allowing them to lead
the “eerie calm” that can emerge when you understand yourself, know what you need and have the resources to support yourself
why asking for help can be one of the most courageous forms of self-care.
We also explore something I believe is particularly important for women in their 40s, 50s and beyond: midlife is not simply a biological transition.
There can also be profound psychological, social and identity changes happening at the same time — changing careers, evolving relationships, children leaving home or still needing us, ageing parents, shifting priorities, perimenopause and menopause, and the growing realisation that the way we have always lived may no longer fit the woman we are becoming.
Perhaps the question isn't simply: “How do I get back to who I was?” But: “What is midlife asking me to reclaim?”
This is a thoughtful conversation for any woman navigating midlife burnout, perimenopause, menopause, emotional exhaustion, stress, identity change or the feeling that she has lost touch with herself.
Hosted by Denise Mokadsi, FeelGood Conversations explores the science, stories and strategies helping women feel good, live aligned and create a life they love.
