Atiku Abubakar has sparked fresh controversy ahead of the 2027 Nigerian presidential election after describing the election as a contest against “thieves.” In a video, the ADC presidential candidate accused those in power of stealing the 2023 election and damaging Nigeria’s economy. He also used the opportunity to clarify his position on fuel subsidy, after comments from one of his aides appeared to create confusion. Atiku says he would restore fuel subsidy if elected, arguing that removing it has increased the hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians. But Peter Obi has a different view on the issue, saying the problem is not necessarily the removal of subsidy, but how the money saved from it is being managed. So, with Atiku and Peter Obi taking different positions on one of Nigeria’s biggest economic issues, what does this mean for the 2027 election?
