This webinar will discuss how to approach writing a research proposal. Ideally, every proposal is unique; however, we will be looking at some of the things reviewers generally look for in a good proposal:
How to explain why your problem is worth investigating, why it matters, and how a realistic study could begin to address it. It does not need all the answers; a good proposal clearly states what is known, what remains uncertain, and what evidence is needed next.
For an initial, short project proposal, we will focus on why it is important to build a foundation rather than trying to solve the whole problem. This might include reviewing existing knowledge, testing available methods or equipment, identifying practical limitations, and producing preliminary data that can support a larger future study.
A strong proposal normally includes:
• A concise statement of the problem or opportunity.
• The context: who is affected and why the issue matters.
• A clear aim and a small number of achievable research questions or objectives.
• A practical method, including what will be measured, compared, observed or tested.
• A realistic timescale, resources and access requirements.
• Expected outputs, such as a dataset, report, prototype, measurement method or recommendations.
• An honest account of limitations, uncertainties and the next research steps.
A realistic, well-defined scope. What you will look at, and what you will not.
A good research proposal shows that the proposed work is useful, feasible, and capable of producing evidence that informs further research, technical development, or professional practice.
The webinar will be geared towards anyone considering applying for funding through the HELA research cooperative, but will hopefully be of interest to anyone looking at preparing a research proposal.
