Deal Castle, in Kent, was built by King Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540 as part of England’s coastal defences against invasion. Along with Walmer Castle and Sandown Castle, it protected the important Downs anchorage. Unlike medieval castles, Deal was designed for gunpowder warfare, with thick circular walls, powerful cannon positions and a deep moat. During the English Civil War (1642–1651), the castle was held by Parliament and saw fighting in Kent. As invasion threats declined, its military importance gradually faded. Today, Deal Castle is one of the best-preserved Tudor coastal forts in England, offering a fascinating glimpse into the military history of Henry VIII’s reign.
