"Beneath the surface: A story of Mardale Green". Today the peaceful waters of Haweswater fill this beautiful valley, surrounded by the mountains of Cumbria.
Beneath the surface lies the story of a village that was once home to a thriving community. In the 1930s the valley was intentionally flooded to create Haweswater Reservoir, providing water for Manchester. Yet Mardale Green has never quite disappeared forever. Some Summers when the water levels fall, reminders of the old village can sometimes appear once again. The Dunn Bull Inn was blown up, and the church was dismantled, brick by brick. Nobody was left behind in the churchyard before the flooding, the remains of 97 people were exhumed, and carried along the coffin trail(corpse road) over the moorland to Shap, Cumbria for re-internment in the Church.
An old church chair was rescued by one of the workers. With the date inscribed 1684, and is now with his Granddaughters family .. who wishes that one day it may return to the county where it belongs.
Come with us as we search for these hidden villages that time will not forget.
