OYO CHIEFTAINCY DISPUTE: AARE ALMAROOF FARAYA & AWIKONKO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT The controversy surrounding the Oloja of Ago-Oja and the traditional institution of Ago-Oja has generated different claims and reactions, particularly following the recent Supreme Court development in Appeal No. SC/404/2018. In this discussion, Aare Almaroof Faraya and Awikonko examine the history of the dispute, the relationship between the earlier Baale of Ago-Oja case and the present Oloja institution, and the issues surrounding the elevation and recognition of the traditional stool. The earlier legal proceedings began with a 2007 Oyo State High Court judgment concerning the Baale of Ago-Oja, which was later affirmed by the Court of Appeal in 2017. In 2026, the controversy continued after the Oyo State Government elevated and installed Ganiyu Ajiboye Busari as Oloja of Ago-Oja, despite the pending Supreme Court proceedings. The Supreme Court subsequently dismissed the appeal on 28 September 2026. However, there are differing interpretations of what that dismissal means for the present Oloja/Oba institution. The Ago-Oja Traditional Institution maintains that the order did not itself determine the substantive validity of the present institution and points to subsequent Oyo State legislation and government recognition. In this video, Aare Almaroof Faraya and Awikonko give their perspectives on the controversy and address the claims circulating in the public space. Watch the full discussion and hear their views on the Oloja of Ago-Oja, the Supreme Court proceedings, Oyo traditional institutions and the need for truth, understanding and peace.
