The third commandment in Exodus chapter twenty, verse seven concerns far more than profanity. Its Hebrew syntax addresses the misuse of the divine name within a covenant relationship, where Israel bears the name of Yahweh as his servant people. The grammatical and covenant context therefore raises a deeper question. Can fallen covenant servants represent God truthfully while remaining under covenant sanctions? Jesus enters that legal horizon as the obedient Son who bears the name of the Father without distortion. The command exposes the inadequacy of moralism because truthful representation requires more than correct speech. It requires perfect covenant faithfulness. Across the canonical covenants, Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David each contribute to the developing pattern of divine name, presence, representation, and covenant obligation, yet every shadow reveals human failure. The temple, priesthood, sacrifices, and royal office anticipate a faithful name bearer who can finally accomplish what sinful Israel cannot. In Jesus, the third commandment reaches its Christological fulfillment through active obedience, substitutionary death, resurrection vindication, and covenant rest. The Son glorifies the Father under judgment, bears the penalty of covenant breakers, rises as the vindicated representative, and creates a New Covenant people who bear his name through union with him.
