Keeper of the Stories celebrates the remarkable griot tradition of West Africa—a centuries-old cultural heritage in which history, genealogy, music, and collective memory are carried from one generation to the next through the spoken word and song. Known as jeli in many Mandé cultures, griots have served as musicians, historians, storytellers, genealogists, and keepers of community memory. Long before histories were routinely written in books, they preserved knowledge of families, communities, kingdoms, journeys, conflicts, and the people who came before. This original song pays homage to that tradition, with music inspired by the sounds of the kora, balafon, hand percussion, storytelling vocals, and communal call-and-response. At its heart is a simple idea: knowing where we came from helps us understand who we are. Stories connect generations. They preserve lives that might otherwise be forgotten, carry lessons from the past, and allow each generation to add its own chapter before passing the story on.
