Deep in the frozen wilderness of Siberia lies Norilsk, one of the most extreme cities on Earth.
Home to more than 100,000 people, Norilsk sits hundreds of kilometers from the nearest major road and above the Arctic Circle. For weeks each winter, the sun never rises above the horizon. Temperatures plunge far below freezing, violent blizzards can reduce visibility to almost nothing, and the ground remains permanently frozen.
Yet people live here—and the reason is buried beneath the permafrost.
Norilsk sits above one of the world's richest deposits of nickel, palladium, copper, and platinum. These valuable metals helped turn an impossible Arctic location into a major industrial city.
But Norilsk's history is also deeply connected to the Soviet Gulag. During the 1930s and 1940s, prisoners of Norillag were forced to work in brutal conditions building mines, smelters, and infrastructure that helped create the modern city.
Today, Norilsk has schools, universities, apartment buildings, sports facilities, theaters, and thousands of families who call this frozen city home.
But its industrial wealth has come with a huge environmental cost. Decades of mining and smelting have caused severe pollution, damaged forests, and transformed the landscape around the city. The 2020 Norilsk diesel spill became one of the largest Arctic fuel spills ever recorded.
So why does Norilsk still exist?
This documentary explores the incredible story of Norilsk, Russia—the frozen city built on valuable minerals, shaped by forced labor, surrounded by permafrost, and transformed by one of the harshest climates on Earth.
🌍 Watch until the end to discover why more than 100,000 people continue to call Norilsk home.
