PlayStation India is facing serious allegations of censoring gaming journalists and blacklisting media outlets over negative coverage of Sony’s controversial move away from physical games. According to reporting from High Chaos Run, certain gaming publications were allegedly denied media access to major PlayStation games including Marvel’s Wolverine, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and Phantom Blade Zero after coverage that supposedly put PlayStation India in a “bad light.” Games journalist Rishabh Sabarwal has also publicly corroborated claims that multiple media outlets were affected, raising new questions about Sony, PlayStation censorship, gaming journalism, media blacklists, and the growing problem of access journalism in the video game industry.
The controversy also comes as major gaming publications continue publishing stories emphasizing the decline of physical games and the rapid growth of digital PS5 game sales. Sony’s own PlayStation sales data shows digital full-game purchases dominating physical sales, but those statistics do not provide a true apples-to-apples comparison of games released both physically and digitally because digital-only releases inflate the digital share. Digital games may be more popular overall, but millions of PlayStation players still buy physical PS5 games, while used games, resale, lending, game preservation, physical ownership, and consumer choice are largely excluded from the physical-versus-digital sales numbers dominating recent headlines. The debate is therefore much more complicated than simply claiming physical games are dying and an all-digital PlayStation future is inevitable.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation Boycott campaign is escalating as players protest Sony’s physical-media strategy by avoiding PlayStation consoles, game purchases, and PlayStation Plus subscriptions. The combination of the PlayStation India blacklist allegations, concerns about access journalism, Sony’s digital game licensing policies, and backlash over the future of physical PlayStation discs has created a much larger debate about trust between Sony, gaming journalists, and PlayStation customers. As Sony pushes further toward digital distribution on PS5 and eventually PS6, the bigger question is whether gaming media can independently scrutinize PlayStation when review copies, previews, interviews, early access, and coverage opportunities may depend on maintaining a positive relationship with the very companies they are supposed to hold accountable. #PlayStation #Gaming #GamingNews
