Who were the Hmong Kaitong (Kiab Toom), and where did their authority really come from? Your Hmong uncle has probably told you a thing or two about Hmong history. Look it up, and you might even find scholarly publications supporting those same stories. But what if some of those claims aren't true? Colonial misspellings, French interpretations of unfamiliar political systems, modern historians' assumptions, and a century-long game of telephone have all shaped how Hmong history is told today. In this episode of Tiger Bite-Sized History, we investigate the history and origins of the Hmong Kaitong, the traditional Hmong leadership institution in the highlands of northern Vietnam and Laos. Through historical documents, contemporary French colonial accounts, Vietnamese administrative records, and Hmong oral traditions, we examine the competing narratives surrounding Hmong political leadership. Who were the Kaitong? Where did the title originate? How did Hmong leaders exercise authority before and during French colonial rule? And how much of what we believe today is actually supported by historical evidence? From the history of Vaj Ncuas Laug, Lo Bliayao, and Pa Chay Vue to the political transformations of Tran Ninh and Xieng Khouang, we revisit familiar stories and examine the evidence behind them. This isn't about disrespecting our uncles or elders. It's about educating ourselves to ASK BETTER QUESTIONS, challenge assumptions, examine original evidence, and distinguish what we know from what we've simply repeated. History is not just about preserving the stories we've inherited. It's also about having the courage to question them. 00:00 - The Hmong Kaitong Mystery 04:25 - Chao Noi: Vaj Ncuas Laug & Hmong Folklore 06:31 - How the Hmong Entered Muong Phuan 09:40 - The Black Flag Invasions 11:42 - Ly Nhiavu: The First Great Clue 14:44 - The Vietnamese Origin of Kaitong 19:00 - Lo Pasee and the Rhinoceros Horn 20:14 - The Forgotten Kaitongs 21:24 - The Kaitong Rebellion of 1896 23:00 - Moua Chong Kai Negotiates with France 24:36 - Route 7 and the Rise of Lo Bliayao 27:15 - Lo Bliayao vs. Pa Chay 29:30 - The End of the Kaitong Institution 30:40 - The Title Was Foreign.
