Hundreds of protesters gathered near Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in New Delhi on October 23, 2026, to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The demonstration has been called by the People Against SIR alliance and student organisations, including AISA.
Left leader Brinda Karat, political activist Yogendra Yadav, RTI activist Anjali Bharadwaj and representatives of student organisations were reportedly present during the initial gathering.
Protesters have planned a march from Bangla Sahib towards the Election Commission of India headquarters. Heavy police deployment and security arrangements have been reported across central Delhi.
Prominent personalities including economist Parakala Prabhakar, actor Prakash Raj and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan are also expected to support or participate in the movement.
The People Against SIR alliance was formed to bring together farmers, workers, students, women's organisations and civil rights activists against the electoral roll revision exercise.
Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory warning of possible traffic disruptions around Bangla Sahib, Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street and Connaught Place.
Will protesters reach the Election Commission headquarters? Will Delhi Police stop the march? Could the ongoing protests increase pressure on CEC Gyanesh Kumar?
Watch this detailed political analysis by Dharmendra Singh, Editor-in-Chief of Online News India, covering the Delhi protest, SIR controversy, Election Commission, police security and the political implications of the nationwide movement.
