Psalm 88

Psalm 88 is the Bible’s darkest psalm, a unique lament in which Heman the Ezrahite cries to God day and night without the note of resolution or praise found in other laments, expressing the anguish of prolonged suffering that God has allowed rather than brought about by personal sin. The psalm gives voice to those living with depression, disability, persecution, grief, ageing, or other unrelenting trials, reminding sufferers that God sees their pain and inviting those who are not suffering to respond with patience, compassion, and prayer. Yet although Psalm 88 ends in darkness, the sermon pointed to the greater hope revealed through Christ: Jesus himself entered the deepest darkness in Gethsemane and on the cross, conquered death through his resurrection, and guarantees that death is not the end for those who trust in him. Believers are God's workmanship, saved by grace and prepared for good works, meaning that even their suffering is not wasted but can become a means of blessing others, just as Heman’s painful song has strengthened God's people for three millennia. The closing prayer thanked God for seeing every sufferer, praised Christ for enduring humanity’s darkest road to bring eternal hope, asked the Holy Spirit to sustain believers in persistent prayer and steadfast faith, prayed for compassionate hearts towards those who suffer, and rejoiced that because of Christ, darkness will never have the final word and nothing can separate God's people from his love.
