This Savage Model 1907 had clearly lived a hard life. The finish was heavily worn from years of handling, with fine micropitting, dents, scratches, scattered rust, and plenty of other signs of abuse. In this video, I take it apart and work through the restoration process to see how much of that damage can be turned around.
The Savage design has a really interesting history. It was created by inventor Elbert Hamilton Searle and used an unusual rotating-barrel system. Searle believed that as the bullet moved through the rifling, it would create enough twisting force to help keep the barrel from rotating and the slide from opening too early.
The idea made sense on paper, but the physics didn’t work quite the way he thought. The barrel and slide still start moving before the bullet has fully left the barrel, so the system works more like a delayed blowback design than a true locked-breech pistol.
Savage later entered a larger .45 ACP version of the design in the U.S. military pistol trials, where it competed against Colt. Savage lost, and Colt’s design became the M1911. The smaller .32 ACP version lived on as the Savage Model 1907 seen here.
