🔸In our ongoing pursuit of rare Tyagaraja kritis rendered by the legendary Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, we are delighted to present a beautiful composition in the Rāga Bégada this week: "Tanavāri-tanamu lédā?" 🔸The structure of this composition is wonderfully classic. Saint Tyagaraja first raises a deeply personal question, elaborates on his yearning, and then brings the emotion to life with vivid, scriptural examples. “O moon-faced Lord Rama, have you no sense of kinship for your own people? Is such indifference ever found among the great kings of the Solar Dynasty? Why must we quibble, my Lord? Do you truly feel no affinity for those who belong to you? Calling them out lovingly by name, one after the other, did you not present precious necklaces to each of your own? Why then this argument with me? Can you not show me that same sweet partiality? Did you not honor your word in days of yore, sitting down to share a meal with the multitude of monkeys? O Rama, Rama, Rama! Grant me your protection—why must you delay any longer?” Acknowledgements: 🌸Our sincere thanks go to the Kavuru Foundation for their immense generosity in sharing this rare gem. This invaluable recording was produced under the Sri Tyagaraja Sahityam Preservation Project, lovingly dedicated to the memory of Sri Kavuru Anantha Ramarao. 🌸The narration and interpretation presented above are inspired by the insightful work in the book "Tyagaraja - Life and Lyrics" by William J. Jackson.
