The recent proposal to change the size of state assemblies through the Constitution Amendment Bill has brought this topic to the forefront, making it even more relevant for UPSC aspirants. Delimitation plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of political power and ensuring that constituencies reflect the actual population distribution. We will cover the historical context of delimitation in India, focusing on the previous exercises that have shaped the country’s electoral system. The Constitution, specifically Articles 82 and 170, provides the legal foundation for delimitation and mandates periodic reviews to adjust the boundaries. These constitutional provisions are vital for upholding the principle of equal representation. In addition, we will discuss the necessity of delimitation to ensure that every citizen’s vote carries equal weight, regardless of where they live. Understanding the implications of delimitation is essential for UPSC preparation, as it relates directly to Polity and Governance topics.
