BW 84 - A Rare Cold War Geiger Counter – AVO No.1 Mk.2 Radiac Survey Meter

In this video, we take another look at a fascinating piece of Cold War history, the AVO No.1 Mk.2 Radiac Survey Meter. Manufactured by AVO Limited (formerly ACWEECO – the Automatic Coil Winder and Electrical Equipment Company) in London, this historic radiation survey instrument dates from the 1950s–1960s. The meter was designed to detect and measure radiation, with a range extending from 0 to 500 Roentgens per hour. Our example is unfortunately missing one of its battery compartment covers, but it remains an interesting surviving example of the equipment used during the Cold War era. We take a closer look at the construction, markings, controls and history of this remarkable instrument and consider the role equipment like this played during an age when the threat of nuclear war was very real. Another fascinating piece of Cold War history from the IKS Exploration collection.
