#WisdomTeeth #HumanEvolution #DentalHealth #AncientHumans #ThirdMolars Why do humans grow wisdom teeth that often don’t fit? In this video, we break down the evolutionary story behind third molars—why they show up late, why they get impacted, and why your jaw is still reading an old blueprint.
Most adults can develop three molars per side of the upper and lower jaw. The first molars usually arrive around age 6, the second around age 12, and the third molars—commonly called wisdom teeth—between about 17 and 25. But modern mouths often don’t have room for them. They tilt sideways, get trapped under bone, press against neighboring teeth, trap bacteria under gum flaps, and sometimes need an oral surgeon to remove them in pieces.
In this video, you’ll learn:
• Why wisdom teeth are called “third molars”
• How ancient diets and heavy chewing shaped human jaws
• Why cooking, tools, agriculture, and soft processed food changed the equation
• What impacted wisdom teeth are—and why they don’t always hurt
• What pericoronitis and dry socket are
• Whether wisdom teeth really cause front-teeth crowding
• Whether humans are evolving to lose wisdom teeth
• Why “remove every wisdom tooth” and “wait until it hurts” are both too simple
• What third molar agenesis means
• Why this is a classic case of evolutionary mismatch
The short version: wisdom teeth were useful chewing tools for our ancestors. Modern jaws, softer diets, and food processing changed the environment around them—but the developmental program for third molars didn’t disappear. Sometimes the tooth fits and works normally. Sometimes it never forms. Sometimes it waits quietly under the gum. And sometimes it charges into the second molar at an angle that looks like a failed parking attempt.
Your jaw belongs to the modern world. Your final molars are still reading the old blueprint.
