Northern Australia has around 100,000 saltwater crocodiles, a jellyfish that can stop a child's heart within minutes, and a soil bacterium that killed 133 of 1,148 patients in a 30-year Darwin study. So is it really more dangerous than the Amazon? The Amazon kills more people. That part is conceded up front. But measured by what happens to a healthy person who walks into the water and the mud, the Top End wins round after round, and the low death toll turns out to be the work of a whole region that organizes its life around staying out of the water. We go category by category, with the Amazon's closest match next to each one: Cahills Crossing and the tide that brings the crocodiles in, the saltie's record-breaking bite and the 2% survival odds in the water, the black caiman, piranha and anaconda records, the box jellyfish and Irukandji against the Amazon stingray, the coastal taipan against the lancehead and the Flying Doctor's airlift, and melioidosis, the killer the wet season brings up out of the ground. Every number comes from peer-reviewed studies, coroner findings and government health data. The Amazon gets the rounds it earns. Real stories, told with respect. 00:00 The Crossing at High Tide 02:47 Chapter 1 — The Causeway 06:25 Chapter 2 — The Animal Under the Mullet 10:55 Chapter 3 — What the Amazon Puts in the Water 15:22 Chapter 4 — The Clear Ones 19:52 Chapter 5 — The Bite and the Plane 23:51 Chapter 6 — What the Rain Brings Up 28:09 Chapter 7 — The Man Who Knew the River #SaltwaterCrocodile #NorthernTerritory #Kakadu #BoxJellyfish #Melioidosis
