How Did Ancient Humans Go to the Toilet Before Toilets Existed?

Who invented the toilet? Most people guess Victorian England. The real answer is over 4,000 years older — and the first flushing system was not even in Europe. This is the full history of toilets, from the world's oldest drains to the flush toilet sitting in your bathroom right now. We start in the Indus Valley, where ancient sanitation and covered drains served cities like Mohenjo-daro centuries before most of the world had running water. Then we move to Roman toilets — the public latrines where Romans shared a sponge on a stick — and why Roman sanitation kept cities alive while medieval hygiene let them collapse. From there: the garderobe hanging off castle walls, the plague years, and the Great Stink of London in 1858, when the Thames itself forced cities to build sewer systems that still work today. Then the flush finally becomes real. John Harington's 1596 water closet, Alexander Cumming's S-trap, and Joseph Bramah's 1778 patent that turned the flush toilet from a royal toy into something the world could actually buy. By the end you'll know who invented the toilet, why it took 400 more years to reach ordinary homes, and why the history of sanitation is the greatest life-saving invention almost nobody credits. chapters: 00:00 - The Handle You Pressed This Morning Has a Dark Secret 00:33 - The 4,500-Year-Old Bathroom That Shouldn't Exist 02:17 - The Roman Bench With No Doors (And One Shared Sponge) 03:25 - The Day the Pipes Went Silent 04:39 - The Cultures That Paid for Poop 05:16 - The Toilet Nobody Wanted (And the Bend That Saved It) 06:24 - How the Flush Nearly Poisoned London 06:41 - The Doctor With a Map and a Hunch 07:12 - The Great Stink That Shamed Parliament 07:55 - The Vote Nobody Expected Sanitation to Win 08:34 - The Promise Millions of Strangers Keep for You History is full of things your school never told you. 📚 On this channel, we explain ancient, medieval, and modern history with 2D animated visuals.
