I had a fantastic conversation with Tom Wisnowski, Founder of NexEra, on the ever‑evolving Buy vs Build debate — and how AI is reshaping the decision in real time. AI has undeniably accelerated build cycles and expanded who can build. What once required specialized engineering teams can now be prototyped by cross‑functional teams in days. But despite this shift, some fundamentals remain unchanged: Anything you build still needs to be safe, secure, and maintainable. Reduced build cost is not zero cost. And every custom solution becomes a long‑term responsibility. One of my favorite analogies from our discussion: Do you really want to buy a seat on the bus (SaaS)… or build and maintain the entire bus when all you need is one seat? We also explored a critical question leaders should ask themselves: 👉 Is this capability core to your business, or is it a commodity? If it’s not core, does it make sense to invest cycles — even if AI makes building faster and cheaper? It was a thought‑provoking session that challenged assumptions and reframed how organizations should approach technology decisions in the AI era.
