On the night of September 26, 2024, a seven-foot storm surge rolled across the south end of Siesta Key and carried off 25 small beach cabanas that had stood there since 1952. The architect Paul Rudolph had bent thin plywood into rows of low arches, so from the sand the whole line looked like waves rolling in off the Gulf. By morning, only the concrete slabs were left. You've probably heard nobody goes to Siesta Key anymore — that the hurricanes wrecked it and the crowds ruined the rest. The truth is stranger: the more famous this beach got, the less room it had for the modest island that made it famous.
