The area of the whole district is 4,004 km² and the population is c. 800,000. The population density is highest around the town and in irrigated areas, though signs of man’s activities are clearly visible throughout the area. The district is part of the alluvial Indus plains. The western and north-western borders run along the outer reaches of the Sulaiman range. The lowest point in the south-east corner is 157 m above sea level. The peak of Sheikh Budin in the north-west dominates the scenery with its height of 1,376 m. The climate is dry tropical.
