How to find your own singing voice — then how to play bar chords on guitar. find your singing voice · true singing voice · how to find your singing voice · bar chords · barre chords · E form barre chord · A form barre chord · guitar bar chords What you sing like now is collection of habits, not the way your voice has to stay. Decide what you want your voice to be for yourself and the audience. Decide what you like in a singer as sound and skills, not as old memories or meaningful lyrics. Decide the style or styles you want to perform. Pick two or three amazing singers in that style and study just the voices themselves — if they sang the alphabet song, would you still want their sound? Pour those voices into yourself by learning what they do, how they do it. Imitation is not limitation - you are influenced by these hero voices, not erased. Any good teacher should be able to help you sound like you want to sound, not like the teacher's clone. Then barre chords. Open chords do not move: because the open strings stay put. Movable chords keep the same chord type even as the fingers move up or down. A barre chord is a movable shape that uses one finger as to hold down multiple strings. Most three-finger open shapes can become a barre if you shift fingers so the first finger is free to become a barre one or two frets behind the original shape, across all or most of the strings. The whole group moves. One fret behind for the E form, two frets behind for the A form. Do not start practicing at fret 1 or 2 - fourth to ninth fret is easier for now. Practice in this order: learn to make the barre alone (roll the finger onto the bonier side, thumb opposite, find the strongest pinch, squeeze, then strum). When the barre is good, add the other fingers and practice the same way — every one in place, no pressure, squeeze, strum. Do not hold the tension while you hunt for fingers, you'll tire out quickly. When the sound is good and clean, start finding the chord names: call out G, Bb, C# and find them from the E. One shape then makes every major of that type. Wowwza! Last week (Play & Sing Q&A #90): how to play and sing at the same time on guitar and piano — simple song, play all the way through the first chord change — then the difference between maj7 vs 7 vs m7 chords. https://youtube.com/live/Oo9DhUFvTKE NOT WEEKLY LESSONS: If you want a one-hour Playing & Singing Assessment ($150) and a 90-day plan: https://www.markteachesmusic.com/teac...
