At Calvary, Jesus did not merely forgive individual acts of sin; He bore the judgment our disobedience deserved, redeemed us from the curse attached to the Law, and opened the way for the blessing promised to Abraham to come to all who receive Him by faith.
In previous sessions: The Cross dealt with the barrier between us and God.
But today we move to another accomplishment of Calvary.
Today: The Cross deals with the judgment that stood against us because of disobedience.
The question today is: What happened to the curse?
Many believers understand that Jesus died “for my sins,” but have never carefully understood what Scripture means when Paul declares:
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law.”
And this message matters enormously in our congregation.
It matters to the young person trying to understand whether the failures of his family will determine his future.
It matters to the middle-aged believer who has experienced repeated setbacks and wonders: “Is something working against me?”
It matters to the older believer who still carries fear from things spoken over the family decades ago.
And it can be especially important in immigrant Christian communities from West Africa, where people may have grown up hearing a lot of talk about:
• Altars, ancestral curses, family curses, village covenants, witchcraft,
• generational patterns, words spoken over families, and spiritual consequences inherited from previous generations.
Here’s the thing: In Christ: we must not build our theology from fear, folklore, dreams, or cultural assumptions.
We must ask: What did Jesus’ Cross actually accomplish?
Because if Christ truly became a curse for us, then believers need to understand the finished work they are standing in
