The Golden Gate, Kyiv Ukraine

The Golden Gate is a monument of defensive architecture from the era of Kyivan Rus' under the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. In the 11th century, together with the Sophia, Lyadski, and Lviv Gates, as well as the ramparts and the moat, it formed a unified defensive system for Kyiv. Beyond its defensive function, the Golden Gate also served as a site for ceremonial entries and departures, where princely retinues, dignitaries, and ambassadors were welcomed and seen off. This was because the gate served as the main overland entrance to Kyiv from the southwest.
