O.J. Simpson didn’t act alone? Unsealed federal files link mob informant Joey Ippolito ("Joe Bentley") to the missing Bundy Drive murder weapon.
For 32 years, the serrated knife used to murder Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman on June 12, 1994, has remained the most famous missing murder weapon in American True Crime history. Prosecutors told the 1995 Los Angeles jury that O.J. Simpson acted entirely alone during the Bundy Drive killings and the 65-minute cleanup window at his Rockingham estate before his 11:45 PM flight to Chicago. However, a landmark October 2026 New York Times investigation by Mike Baker and Tim Arango—backed by a newly unsealed December 4, 1996 federal sentencing memorandum (United States v. Joseph Ippolito) filed with SDNY Judge Kimba M. Wood reveals that federal prosecutors certified a fugitive DeCavalcante crime family associate named Joseph "Joey" Ippolito Jr. (also known as "Joe Bentley") had direct insider knowledge of how O.J. Simpson’s murder weapon was disposed of.
Five weeks before the Brentwood murders, on May 6, 1994, Joey Ippolito escaped from a federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida, allegedly picked up by a driver matching the profile of Simpson’s lifelong best friend and former bodyguard, Al "A.C." Cowlings. Operating out of Santa Monica's PCH Bar and Grill, Ippolito had built deep ties with Cowlings, Simpson, and Miami-to-LA drug courier Charlie Ehrlich—who later accompanied Simpson during his 2007 Las Vegas armed robbery arrest. After the infamous June 17, 1994 White Bronco police chase, LAPD detectives found the phone number to Ippolito’s prison mess hall inside Al Cowlings' wallet and photos of Ippolito’s girlfriend inside the Bronco, while rapper Fat Joe later revealed on the Joe and Jada podcast that "Joe Bentley" claimed he was waiting at a local airport with a private jet to fly Simpson out of the country.
This investigative documentary examines the two competing accomplice theories: the unsealed 1996 SDNY federal informant records versus Sam Ippolito’s explosive claim that Joey returned to their Doheny Drive hideout in West Hollywood at midnight on June 12, 1994, with blood on his hands and a heavy object in a bag that Sam threw into a construction dumpster. We analyze Sam Ippolito’s subsequent recantation over a documentary payday, the brutal 1997 mafia murder of his brother by Neil "Guy" Lombardo, the striking parallels to the mysterious "Charlie" in O.J. Simpson’s 2006 hypothetical confession book *If I Did It*, and why LAPD Detective Tom Lange and lead prosecutor Marcia Clark never presented Joey Ippolito’s name to the jury in what remains an open homicide investigation.

Do you believe Joey Ippolito was the real "Charlie" who helped O.J. Simpson dispose of the murder weapon and bloody clothes inside that 65-minute cleanup window, or do Sam Ippolito’s demand for documentary money and Detective Tom Lange’s skepticism convince you O.J. acted completely alone? Drop your verdict in the comments—and tell me how Marcia Clark never heard the name of a vetted federal informant during the Trial of the Century.
