In early 2018, wall-plugged kitchen clocks across 25 European countries began to run slow. By March, they were exactly 6 minutes behind, and the cause was an unpaid electricity bill 1,600 miles away.
Most of us think of the power grid as a network that simply delivers electricity. In reality, it is a single, continent-sized machine turning in perfect step. Simple wall clocks do not keep time on their own; they rely on this machine to spin at exactly 50 cycles per second.
When a political dispute in northern Kosovo left 113 gigawatt-hours of electricity unbalanced, the entire European grid slowed down by a fraction of a hertz. This video explores the physics, history, and delicate balance of the machines that power our world, and what happens when they fall out of sync.
