Greenland looks as big as Africa. In reality, Africa is 14 times bigger. Alaska looks like half the United States; it's about a fifth. Rome looks like it sits in the warm south; it's further north than New York. Every flat map has to distort the round Earth, and the map on your classroom wall, and on your phone, made a very specific choice in 1569. Here's what it cost us, why we still use it, and which map actually tells the truth. 0:00 The map lies 0:32 The impossible problem 1:43 Mercator's bargain 3:21 Where things really are 4:11 The shortcut that looks like a detour 4:58 Which way is up? 6:00 Why it's on your phone 7:01 The only honest map Facts and sources • Gauss's Theorema Egregium (1827): a sphere can't be flattened without distortion. • Gerardus Mercator's world map (1569); "Atlas" is the title of his map collection (1595). • Africa ≈ 30.4 million km², Greenland ≈ 2.2 million km² (≈ 14×); Russia ≈ 17.1 million km² (Africa ≈ 1.8×). • Latitudes: Madrid 40.4°N, New York 40.7°N, Rome 41.9°N, Paris 48.9°N, Seattle 47.6°N, Toronto 43.7°N, Portland 45.5°N, Moscow 55.8°N, Juneau 58.3°N, London 51.5°N, Northwest Angle (northernmost point of the lower 48) 49.4°N. • January average highs (1991–2020): London about 47°F, New York (Central Park) about 40°F. • New York → Singapore: great circle ≈ 9,530 mi, peaking at 87.5°N (≈ 170 mi from the North Pole); constant-heading "straight line" on Mercator ≈ 11,500 mi. Dubai → Los Angeles great circle peaks near 84°N. • Closest US state to Africa: Maine, ≈ 3,160 mi (West Quoddy Head → Morocco) vs Florida ≈ 3,950 mi. • Tabula Rogeriana, al-Idrisi, 1154 (south at the top). Ptolemy's Geography (c. 150 AD), rediscovered in Europe c. 1400. • Google Maps launched in 2005 on Web Mercator; globe view when zoomed out since 2018. Boston Public Schools adopted Gall–Peters maps in March 2017. Equal Earth projection: Šavrič, Patterson & Jenny, 2018. • Earth's equatorial radius ≈ 6,378 km, polar ≈ 6,357 km. Distances are great-circle distances on the WGS84 ellipsoid. The arrangement of the USA, China and India inside Africa is illustrative (true sizes, equal-area projection).
