How People Live in Socotra | Alien Isolated Island That Doesn't Belong on Earth | 4K Travel Documentary
Somewhere in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Yemen, lies an island that looks like it belongs on another planet. Trees shaped like flying saucers bleed red sap. Bulbous plants swell out of bare rock. And nothing here — almost nothing — grows anywhere else on Earth.
In this 4K travel documentary, we explore how people live on Socotra, one of the most isolated and otherworldly places on the planet. Cut off from the mainland for millions of years, this Yemeni archipelago became a living laboratory of evolution: home to around 60,000 people and hundreds of species found nowhere else in the world. It's why scientists call it "the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean" — and why visitors say it feels like stepping onto an alien planet.
We look at the daily life of the Socotri people, who speak an ancient unwritten language older than Arabic and have survived for millennia as fishermen and herders on this remote island. We explore the famous dragon's blood trees and how they're now under threat, where food and fresh water come from on a place this cut off, and what it's really like to grow up in one of the last truly isolated communities on Earth.
This is life on an island that shouldn't exist — and the people who've called it home for thousands of years.
