Today we’re listening to Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” one of the most intimate and unforgettable vocal recordings of its era. Written by Ewan MacColl, the song existed for years before Flack transformed it into the extraordinarily slow, spacious interpretation that became a major hit in 1972. Rather than relying on vocal fireworks, she creates intensity through restraint—phrasing, breath, dynamics, tone, silence, and an incredible sense of time. As two classical musicians, we were especially fascinated by how little Flack needs to do to communicate so much. Nothing feels hurried or excessive; the accompaniment leaves enormous space around her voice, and every entrance seems carefully considered. It’s a beautiful reminder that virtuosity doesn’t always mean playing or singing more. Sometimes the greatest challenge is having the control and confidence to do less—and make every note matter.
