This utterly delightful and compelling trio expresses the graceful voice of youth and joy. Although it is only rarely performed, its transparency and charm are a gateway into deep order and profound depth of expression. Written around 1863, the Piano Trio No. 1 is one of Saint-Saëns’ earliest chamber works, but it shows his trademark style fully in place: elegant, tuneful, and supremely confident in its craftsmanship. He conceived this piece as a young man on holiday in the Pyrenees and incorporated elements of the local folk music. Can you hear the sound of the hurdy-gurdy in movements two and four?
