🎬 Has Punjabi cinema traded meaningful storytelling for box-office numbers, repetitive comedy and commercial formulas?
Before Carry On Jatta became a blockbuster franchise, Harbhajan Mann and director Manmohan Singh were helping bring Punjabi cinema back to life with films that celebrated Punjab, its people, its culture and the emotional connection between Punjabis and their homeland.
From JEE AAYIAN NU (2002) to ASA NU MAAN WATNA DA (2004), DIL APNA PUNJABI (2006) and MITTI WAJAN MAARDI (2007), these films offered more than entertainment. They explored identity, family, migration, relationships and the meaning of belonging. Their work helped reconnect audiences in Punjab with the Punjabi diaspora worldwide.
But look at Punjabi cinema today.
💥 Has the industry become too dependent on comedy?
💥 Are box-office collections being prioritised over quality storytelling?
💥 Why do meaningful Punjabi stories seem to struggle for the same attention as commercial entertainers?
💥 Has Carry On Jatta helped Punjabi cinema grow, or has its success encouraged an overreliance on the same formula?
And the biggest question of all: Was Harbhajan Mann right to argue that Punjabi cinema must offer more than comedy?
Let's be clear: commercial success is not automatically bad cinema. Carry On Jatta 3 achieved a major box-office milestone, crossing ₹100 crore worldwide according to contemporary trade reports. But financial success and artistic contribution are two different things.
In this episode of THE SANGHA SHOW, we're examining the contrast between the cinema associated with Harbhajan Mann's early career and the commercial direction represented by Gippy Grewal's blockbuster comedy franchise.
Was the older era better at preserving Punjabi identity? Has the industry lost its creative ambition? Or are audiences simply getting the films they want?
And where does Gippy Grewal fit into this debate?
