Five hundred and ten thousand dollars glows on your phone. It's 7:52 on a Monday morning in the parking lot of Pruitt Cabinetry, and your boss is walking toward a taped-up Corolla with a clipboard and the smile of a man who has never wondered whether you could leave.
This is a seven-level story about seventeen years at one shop: a cracked stool, a carpenter's one-sentence advice, a layoff you could have stopped with a single sentence, and a number you never said out loud.
What you'll take away (with real numbers from the story):
• Splitting a raise: when pay went from $14.25 to $22 an hour, the hero put the match first (401k from 3% to 8%), raised the Roth to $150 a paycheck, and spent the rest. The balance went from $1,680 at 25 to $96,400 at 31 to $510,000 at 41.
• The crossover: one year the paychecks put $11,400 into the accounts and the market put in $14,700. After that, the savings make more than the saver.
• A 21% market drop ($330,000 to $260,700) was survived by not selling and raising the transfer from $950 to $1,150 a month. A $9,400 cash cushion paid for a $2,900 transmission instead of a loan or a sale.
• A common rule of thumb (4% a year, a guideline and not a promise) puts $42,000 a year of spending at about $1.05 million. Leaving $398,000 untouched until 62 at 4% real growth gets close, about $1.02 million, which is why the job stops being the only plan.
• The cost of silence is not in the numbers: Teodoro, 58, lost his job after 26 years because nobody spoke. One sentence might not have changed it. Nobody will know.
