The Dark Story of Hearst Castle: The Palace Its Owner Left in TEARS and Never Saw Again
The official story of Hearst Castle is a love letter. A newspaper king, a gifted architect, a hill above the Pacific, and twenty-eight years of building that ended with a gift to the people of California. But in May 1947, William Randolph Hearst rode down the Enchanted Hill in tears and never came back. Ten years earlier, his empire had been $126 million in debt. His zoo was closed, and the zebras were let loose on the ranch. A Spanish monastery he had shipped over stone by stone ended up scattered through a park. His art went on sale on the fifth floor of a department store in New York. The woman who ran the castle for twenty years wrote him a check for a million dollars and was not allowed at his funeral. And on November 5, 1950, he had signed one document his family did not want to exist.
