This is more than a playthrough of the VTOL mission "The Island: Open Water." It is a complete training session on how to succeed at the scenario and fly the AV-42 C Kestrel, as well as use its tools and weapons systems.
The video is specifically deaf and hearing impaired friendly. Instructions are pertinent, clear, and concise - and not just whatever comes off the top of the pilot's head during the flight. All instructions are overlaid as text (open captions) perfectly timed to the action so you don't have to choose between reading the captions or watching what's being shown.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
• Free deck launch: why the AV-42C's low stall speed lets you skip the catapult. Use a 45° engine-tilt and a short-field takeoff to get airborne at-speed faster
• Cockpit setup: lighting up the MFDs (TGP, PWR, SOI, HEAD, NAV, EQUIP) and managing your weapons loadout and settings
• Weapon config: rocket salvo and ripple, CCRP AUTO bombing, bomb release area/spacing, chaff/flare release rate and mode
• Autopilot: NAV to waypoints, HDG, ALT
• Tactics: 20,000 foot approach and how to do attack runs without having your wings blown off
• Finding and targeting the enemy with the HMD and the targeting pod (TGP)
• Reading the CCRP bomb HUD (ASL, drop line, release brackets, release cue) and using the autopilot to maximize effective attacks
• Anti-ship Mk-82 bombing runs. 5,000 ft keeps you above the deck guns
• Missile defense: the Missile Warning system (MWS), beaming missile defense, and evasive maneuvers
• Split-S maneuver for fast attack runs
• Rocket attacks with PIP (Predicted Impact Point) targting and leading moving targets
• Vertical landing on the carrier tips and tricks for perfect landings
FROM THE ON-SCREEN INSTRUCTIONS
"The fastest way off the deck is a free deck launch. It gets you in the air at speed faster than either a catapult or a vertical takeoff."
"Brake lock OFF. Hold the throttle brake! Engine tilt to 45°"
"Salvo: How many rockets fired per trigger pull. Ripple: How many salvos per minute are fired when the trigger is held down."
"CCRP AUTO: Hold the trigger and bombs drop automatically when the release cue passes through the brackets."
"Release area (Bomb spacing): Distance in meters along which bombs are dropped."
"Turn on the HMD and start scanning for the enemy fleet."
"Use the 'B' button on the flight stick to select the Mk-82 bombs."
"Click down on the flight stick's tophat to lock the targeting reticle anywhere near the ships. You'll use the TGP directly to target individual ships."
"Locking onto the target in the TGP creates the solution line (ASL). Fly the drop line to overlay the ASL. Fire when the release cue (diamond) is between the release brackets."
"HDG (Heading) cheat to keep the drop line on the ASL."
"Keep checking your target lock. It WILL slip during maneuvering."
"Pre-program ALT to 5000. This keeps us above the deck guns."
"Split-S: Invert, power OFF and brake ON to tighten up the pull through, pull back on the stick, level off."
"The MWS (Missile Warning System) is detecting a missile headed for us. First we'll put it abeam of us (90° to our flight path). This screws up its doppler sensing."
"Set the TGP mode to PIP (Predicted Impact Point). The circle is where you're aiming. The square is where you'll hit."
"PIP does not anticipate target movement. If the target is moving, you'll still need to lead."
"Requesting a vertical landing: HOME → COMMS → ATC → Aircraft carrier → Vert Landing"
"Engine tilt to 90° (we'll glide in). HVR and ALT (Hover mode). Don't balloon up!"
"Put the FPM right on the landing pad."
