An oil platform stops producing. Its owners still have years of work to pay for. When Pioneering Spirit lifted Brent Delta’s 24,200-tonne upper structure from the North Sea in 2017, the spectacular removal was only one stage of retirement. Its wells had already been sealed, and dismantling the topside continued until 2019. This documentary follows the money behind offshore decommissioning: the wells beneath the seabed, specialist removal contracts, onshore dismantling, recycling revenue and the tax relief that shares some of the economic cost with public finances. Why doesn’t recovering 97% of a platform’s topside mean recovering 97% of the money? Who earns revenue when production ends? And what responsibilities remain after the visible structure disappears?
