“But if not…”— the most powerful words of faith in scripture. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego knew God was able to deliver them from the fiery furnace. But they also declared that even if He did not, they would still believe. That kind of faith is easy to talk about. It is much harder to live. My brother Jeff asked me to write this song two years ago. It’s taking me this long to get the courage up to put my own voice to my own story.  Jeff went through a faith crisis that lasted nearly three years. He prayed every day. He kept seeking. He kept showing up. And somewhere in that long season of uncertainty, his prayer became something like this: “God, I still hope You will give me the answer I’m looking for. But even if You don’t, I will still believe.” I have had to learn that lesson in a different way. Throughout my own health journey, I have begged God for healing. I have prayed to be healed the way the woman with the issue of blood was healed—completely, miraculously, and in a moment. That has not been my story. At least not yet. And so I continue to pray for the miracle. I continue to believe that God is able to give it. But I am also learning that faith cannot depend entirely on whether the answer comes the way I hoped it would. I know He can. I pray He will. But if not… I will still believe. This song is for anyone who has prayed faithfully and is still waiting. For the person who has asked for healing, an answer, a child, a restored relationship, relief from grief, or a miracle that hasn’t come. Maybe faith isn’t always believing that God will change our circumstances. Sometimes faith is trusting Him even if He doesn’t. Thank you for listening to something that means so much to both of us.
