Been trying this for a few months when I have time to do runs. Finally got the run I was going for- new World Record by 7 seconds! And extra fun that it's on original Arcade hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions answered below!
This game is Versus Super Mario Bros.- A game similar to the original, but with many significant differences. It's essentially Super Mario Bros. 1.5. All of the levels have been changed. Some of them just have a few extra enemies or slight level layout changes. Others feature significant changes and added difficulty. And 6 levels are completely brand new. These 6 new levels went on to be used in SMB2-J / The Lost Levels. That game basically exists because they had fun making this game, and wanted to keep making new hard levels. This game came out before 2J. And it was only released in North America, not even in Japan!
This game also has a faster timer tickdown rate, you can only warp as far as World 6, time counts down at the end of castle stages, and it's much harder to do RNG manipulation / guarantee what patterns you get. This game does have framerules. And yes flagpole glitch is possible in this game, and on the arcade stick as well. Flagpole glitch is only a good option when there are no other options for places to save time.
I own this arcade machine, and bought it off a marketplace after keeping my eye out for one for a couple years. They rarely pop up, you usually only see way overpriced listings like $3-4k on ebay. I got this one for $1200 which I think is a pretty good price for how rarely they pop up. My original intent in getting it was to go for the High Score record some day, since that's a really cool run. But in the meantime I am doing speedruns on it as well!
