Berchtesgaden National Park is in the alpine section of Bavaria, south of the town of Berchtesgaden. In 1978, to preserve the beauty of this region of lakes and mountains, the Bavarian government founded the Berchtesgaden National Park, which centres around the lake Königsee. Surrounded by high mountain walls at the end of the valley is the Obersee. The Berchtesgaden National Park covers an area of 210 km² or 81 sq. miles. It is state property in its entirety.
