Why do traffic jams form even without accidents or bottlenecks? This video explains the physics behind highway congestion. We introduce the "phase transition hypothesis" namely, jams arise naturally once car density gets too high, not just from bottlenecks). Along with theory and simulations, we conducted a traffic jam experiment with a circular-track experiment at Nagoya Dome, where a traffic jam spontaneously forms and propagates backward with no bottleneck at all.
