A girl needs somewhere to land. Not somewhere perfect. Somewhere warm. Somewhere safe. Somewhere she doesn't have to earn the right to stay. A Girl Needs Somewhere to Land is Chapter 2 of The Woman with the Scarlet Heart — an original 17-part fictional musical by Bluebird & Soul. This chapter explores childhood adversity, housing instability, youth homelessness, vulnerability, safety, belonging and the survival adaptations that can develop when a young person has no reliable place to land. It also begins to examine something more fundamental: the human need for attachment, safety and belonging. What happens when having somewhere to sleep, someone to belong to, or simply not being alone depends upon adapting yourself to the people and places offering that safety? What parts of yourself might you soften, silence or reshape when attachment feels necessary for survival? This isn't necessarily a conscious bargain. A young person may never think: I WILL TRADE AUTHENTICITY FOR BELONGING. They may simply learn: THIS IS WHO I NEED TO BE HERE. And when safety and attachment are uncertain, that lesson can become extraordinarily powerful. This chapter asks us to look more closely at the idea of “choice.” What choices are actually available when safety, shelter and belonging are uncertain? What can a young person learn about trust, dependence, relationships and their own needs when somewhere to land may depend upon another person's willingness to let them stay? And what behaviours might make more sense when we understand the needs underneath them? The question isn't simply: WHY DID SHE CHOOSE THE DOORWAY? It is: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE NEST WON'T HOLD HER? She wasn't chasing danger. She was looking for somewhere to land.
