I really like this track.
But something about the main melody wasn’t working for me.
The three sounds that make up the focal point of the track felt a little hollow, lifeless and rigid. The track had space, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but this didn’t feel like intentional space.
It just felt empty.
So instead of adding another sound directly into the arrangement, I tried building something around the melody.
I created a return channel using reverb, EQ and chorus, then offset the signal by around 50 milliseconds to create a delayed layer that sits around the original melody.
I then side-chained that return to the kick and snare so the effect moves rhythmically with the track, ducking and reappearing around the main melody.
The result was a much more alive and moving space without simply filling the arrangement with more sounds.
I also experimented with:
• A tight reverb return for the kick and snare to help place the drums in their own space
• True panning on the hi-hats to open up the stereo field
• Rebalancing the return effect once the rest of the mix started interacting with it
This is one of those sessions where a few relatively small decisions completely changed how the track felt.
Not by making it busier.
By making the space work harder.
This isn’t a polished step-by-step tutorial. It’s a real mixing session, following an idea, experimenting and seeing where it leads.
