Are we slowly losing our ability to think for ourselves? AI can now write, summarize, plan, solve problems, generate ideas, and even help us reason through decisions. But as we rely on it to do more of our thinking, an uncomfortable question emerges: What happens to the abilities we stop using ourselves? The surprising part is that humans have been outsourcing cognitive work for thousands of years. From writing and calculators to GPS, Google, and now generative AI, we've always relied on external tools to extend what our minds can do. Psychologists call this **cognitive offloading**. In this documentary, I explore the psychology and science of cognitive offloading to understand why we rely on external tools, what they change about our memory and thinking, and whether AI is fundamentally different from the technologies that came before it. I explore how cognitive offloading evolved through history, the Extended Mind theory, the Google Effect, and what research tells us about memory, learning, automation bias, and skill decay. We also look at a growing body of research on generative AI, including how AI can improve learning, why relying on it doesn't always translate into independent ability, and how different ways of using AI may produce very different outcomes. Finally, I explore how we can use AI to support our thinking without unnecessarily giving up the abilities we still want to develop. So is AI making us less capable, or helping us accomplish more than ever before? Maybe the real question isn't whether we should use AI. Maybe it's which parts of our thinking we want AI to extend—and which parts we want to keep our own. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS 00:00 — Is AI changing how we think? 01:44 — What is cognitive offloading? 06:09 — How humans began outsourcing thinking 14:41 — What do we gain from cognitive offloading? 18:01 — What can cognitive offloading cost us? 22:39 — What makes generative AI different? 29:53 — How should we use AI? 34:27 — The final verdict ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ RESEARCH & PAPERS REFERENCED 01 — Cognitive Offloading — Evan F.
