When you step out of a hot shower, pull on a clean shirt, and reach for sunscreen, you probably don’t think twice about the color of the skin underneath. But for your ancestors, skin was survival equipment. Once early humans lost much of their protective body hair, intense ultraviolet radiation began striking exposed skin directly—and natural selection started rewriting the body’s relationship with sunlight.
