Qadri Jugni | Ranjhan Ali | Qawali | Rangley Punjabis | The Peninsula Studios The Peninsula Studios found Ranjhan Ali and his ensemble in Verka, a small village outside Amritsar, where he sings outside gurudwaras and inside dargahs, carrying a repertoire of Sufi poets forward one gathering at a time. He arrived at the studio willing to record through the night — that, he said, was simply how Qawwali is done. Qawwali traces its roots to the 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau, a disciple of Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi, widely credited as the form's father. In Punjab, the tradition absorbed centuries of Sufi verse from Baba Farid, Bulleh Shah and others, sung at dargahs and shrines as a means of reaching devotional ecstasy. Ranjhan Ali belongs to the Qadiri Sufi order and performs compositions from across this lineage — Baba Fareed, Bulleh Shah, Amir Khusrau — keeping a centuries-old form alive in the same village settings where it has always lived, largely outside the concert circuit.
